The downstream applications of industrial silicon are mainly divided into three major fields:
1. Organic silicon (consumption accounting for 40%)
Organic silicon is widely used downstream and has great potential for development in the Chinese market. The organic silicon industry chain is relatively long, including front-end organic silicon raw materials, midstream organic silicon monomers, intermediates, and downstream deep processing products. In 2020, the apparent consumption of organic silicon monomers in China was 2.5 million tons, and downstream deep processed products mainly consist of silicone rubber and silicone oil.
2. Polycrystalline silicon (consumption accounting for 30%)
Polycrystalline silicon is referred to as the "cornerstone" of the photovoltaic industry. Against the backdrop of the country continuously promoting the development of strategic emerging industries, in recent years, the demand for polycrystalline silicon market has shown explosive growth and become a new point of downstream consumption of industrial silicon.
3. Aluminum alloy (consumption accounting for 27%)
In the alloy industry, industrial silicon is mainly used as an additive for non ferrous alloys. When silicon is added to certain non-ferrous metals, it can improve the strength, hardness, and wear resistance of the base metal, and sometimes also enhance the casting and welding properties of the base metal. Silicon is widely used in the aluminum alloy and aluminum profile industries.
